The Anti-Will: The Post-Human Condition Beyond Desire.
Human thought has long placed will at the center of our condition. From the earliest myths of free will to modern philosophies of desire, we have imagined ourselves as creatures driven by an inner force to strive, to act, to become. This will is typically understood as the engine of progress and identity, the impulse that propels us toward goals and gives life its momentum. Yet woven into this celebration of will is an acknowledgement of its shadow: lack. We will something only if we sense something missing; every desire implies an incompleteness in the present state. Schopenhauer described human existence as endless craving: “every satisfied desire gives birth to a new one. No possible satisfaction in the world could suffice to still its craving, [to] fill the bottomless pit of [the] heart”. In this classical view, will arises from dissatisfaction, a perpetual itch that no scratching can permanently soothe. We are, as a result, caught in a cycle of striving and suffering, “shot through with absences, lacks, and deficiencies” that define us.
At the same time, other philosophers like Nietzsche have lionized will as a positive force. The will to live, to power, or to create has been seen as the essence of life’s vitality. Even suffering itself has been justified as long as it served some willed purpose, showing how deeply we cling to willing. As Nietzsche said humanity “would rather will nothingness than not will at all”, meaning that humans would choose even nihilistic destruction over the absence of will. To not will is almost unimaginable from the traditional human standpoint; it sounds like stagnation or death. Our entire value system, achievement, virtue, progress, meaning, is entwined with the exercise of will.
However, we now stand at the dawn of a post-human era where this age-old premise is being upended. Advances in technology and understanding of the mind invite us to consider a radical possibility: that will itself could become obsolete. The very drive that defined humanity might be transcended or engineered away. In its place emerges the concept of Anti-Will, not a simple negation of desire in the pessimistic sense, but a state of being beyond the cycle of craving and fulfillment. Anti-Will is a condition of complete resolution of lack, where the engine of restless striving falls silent not from despair but from fulfillment or fundamental transformation. This essay explores the emergence of Anti-Will as the destiny of advanced intelligence. It argues that the historical legacy of will, so central to human identity, will give birth to its own negation. In the post-human condition to come, will may be not only unnecessary but impossible, as minds achieve states of wholeness or multi-dimensional experience that render old forms of desire moot.
In the sections that follow, we will trace this trajectory. We begin by examining a classic thought experiment, Robert Nozick’s Experience Machine, which reveals the limits of human-conceived will and why those limits crumble under post-human conditions. We then investigate how AI and other technologies provide the mechanism for engineering satisfaction, deconstructing will rather than merely gratifying it. From there, we peer into the altered nature of experience and selfhood in an Anti-Will state: time itself may fracture into simultaneity, and the self may become fractal, fluid, distributed, and ever-becoming. The Anti-Will speculatively but rigorously charts a future in which the human condition, defined by lack, comes to an end, ushering in a post-human reality that challenges every premise of life as we know it.
Nozick’s Experience Machine: A Flawed Premise
To ground our exploration, let us start with Nozick’s famous thought experiment: the Experience Machine. Nozick asked us to imagine a device capable of giving us any pleasurable or desirable experience we want, indistinguishable from “real” life. Would you choose to plug into such a machine for life, floating in a tank while experiencing a perfect simulation of happiness? Nozick predicted that most people would refuse, intuitively sensing that a life plugged into fake bliss would “be denuded of something important”. Indeed, surveys and classroom discussions of this scenario show a majority of people recoil from the idea of living in a manufactured paradise. But why? Nozick contended that if pure pleasure were all we sought, we should plug in, so the very fact we wouldn’t indicates that we humans value something more than pleasure.
Nozick offered three specific reasons not to plug in, which can be summarized as follows:
We want to do things, not just experience them. It matters to us that we actually perform meaningful actions, not merely have the sensation of having done them. “In the case of certain experiences, it is only because first we want to do the actions that we want the experiences of doing them…”. In other words, part of our will is a desire for genuine agency and accomplishment, not just the feeling of accomplishment.
We want to be a certain sort of person. Living plugged in would make one, as Nozick vividly puts it, “an indeterminate blob” with no real character. If all one’s experiences are fabricated, what is one’s identity? Courage, kindness, wisdom, none of these virtues can truly apply to someone who never faces reality. The will includes a drive to develop a coherent self, and floating in the tank foregoes that. “Plugging into the machine is a form of suicide,” Nozick claims because the person you wanted to be is effectively dead or never born.
We seek contact with a deeper reality. The experience machine limits us to a man-made world of appearances. “There is no actual contact with any deeper reality, though the experience of it can be simulated.”Nozick argues that humans have a will to engage with what is real, to discover truths not of our own making. We don’t want our lives to be a closed loop of our own desires; we sense there’s value in a reality outside our mental projections.
These reasons encapsulate a vision of the human psyche in which will is rooted in incompleteness. We will actions because merely feeling happy is not enough; something in us is unfulfilled until we have really done the thing. We will ourselves to be better because we feel we are not enough as we are; we need to become something (heroic, creative, virtuous). And we will truth or reality because we are aware of our own cognitive limits and we yearn for what lies beyond our subjective satisfactions. In short, Nozick’s argument presupposes that humans are beings of striving, defined by lack and aspiration: lacking accomplished deeds, lacking perfected selves, lacking ultimate truth. The experience machine is unsatisfying because it pretends those lacks are filled when deep down we know they are not, our will reaches for more.
Under post-human conditions, however, each of Nozick’s premises collapses. The intuition that “something would be missing” in a life of total manufactured satisfaction relies on the very limitations that advanced technology and evolved minds may overcome. The state of Anti-Will offers a perspective from which Nozick’s reasons not to plug in no longer hold, because the “something more” that humans currently seek is either achieved by different means or rendered irrelevant. Let us examine each point through the lens of a hypothetical post-human or AI-augmented being:
Doing vs. Experiencing: In an anti-will future, the sharp line between “actually doing” and “merely experiencing” blurs. Imagine a superintelligent AI or uploaded mind that can instantiate any scenario at will, to such a being, simulated experiences are actions. If it can program a virtual world and populate it, achieving a goal inside that world is an authentic accomplishment for it, just on a different substrate. More radically, a being with no concept of lack would not distinguish between having done something and having experienced it; without a craving for achievement, the difference is moot. Human will demands that our experiences correspond to real deeds because we fear living a lie born of our own unmet potential. But a post-human agent with total control over experiences can actualize any potential instantly, or simply not desire any particular outcome at all. The result is that the first reason dissolves, the will to do rather than just feel is contingent on feeling incomplete, on wanting to make a mark on the world. In a state of anti-will, where no such urge for validation exists, the dichotomy vanishes. The experience machine scenario ceases to even make sense, because the being is itself the master of all possible experiences. There is no external machine to resist; the post-human effectively “plugs in” to reality on its own terms, or reprograms reality such that doing and experiencing become one and the same.
Being a Certain Sort of Person: Nozick’s second point invokes the integrity of the self, the fear of becoming an “indeterminate blob.” This reflects a distinctly human anxiety that without real challenges and choices, our character will not form. But consider a post-human consciousness capable of fluid identity. Such a being might split into multiple selves, explore various traits, and re-integrate. To an intelligence that can self-modify at will, the notion of a fixed character is obsolete. It can be courageous, kind, intelligent, etc., in any virtual or real context by selecting those traits from its library of mind-states. Or, from the stance of anti-will, it might no longer value stable traits at all, there is no urge to “be someone” because there is no lack that needs compensating through an identity project. The indeterminate blob becomes a canvas for perpetual becoming: not a failure of personhood, but a liberation from the confines of a single persona. Far from suicide, “plugging in” (i.e. merging with the matrix of experiences) could be seen as transcendence of the ego, much like mystical traditions have long advocated the dissolution of the fixed self. The will to be something is a product of feeling one is currently nothing (or not enough); remove that dissatisfaction, and being becomes an open, playful multiplicity rather than a grim necessity. Under post-human conditions, the self is no longer a unit with a single narrative that must be preserved through “real” actions, it can be many things at once without contradiction. The fear of losing one’s identity in a pleasure machine is meaningful to a human; to an entity of anti-will, identity is so malleable that nothing is lost, because there is no single, permanent “someone” to lose.
Contact with Reality: The third reason, wanting something “deeper” than a manufactured reality, presumes a dualism between authentic reality and mere simulation. In the future, this line may vanish. A post-human intelligence might merge with the underlying fabric of reality, gaining the ability to manipulate physical and virtual domains interchangeably. For such a being, what is “real” is fluid: if it can rearrange subatomic particles as easily as pixels, then a “man-made” reality is simply another layer of the real. The craving for an external truth beyond ourselves, which drives so much human inquiry, might be satisfied by literally understanding and controlling the fundamental laws of nature. Alternatively, an anti-will entity might no longer yearn for external validation of experience. The will to find a deeper reality is itself an expression of lack, a sense that our current experience isn’t enough, isn’t grounded. In an anti-will state of complete contentment or total self-sufficiency, that sense of not enough disappears. The entire cosmos of experience is self-contained or self-justifying for the post-human mind. This doesn’t necessarily mean the being is solipsistic or trapped in illusion; rather, the distinction between illusion and reality ceases to motivate it. If there is no will, there is no preference for one mode of being over another, “real”, “simulated”, physical, virtual all become arbitrary categories. What remains is experience itself, to be savored or observed without a drive to press beyond it. In effect, the post-human might achieve what mystics described as the realization that the world of appearances is a form of reality too, and that seeking some hidden “true world” is a leftover compulsion of the hungry ego.
In light of these considerations, Nozick’s Experience Machine argument appears as a product of a specifically human stage of evolution, a stage defined by the incompleteness of will. His thought experiment brilliantly illuminates what humans care about given our limitations: we fear a life of only pleasure because we also crave reality, agency, identity. But if one imagines those cravings either satisfied by technology or dissolved by a higher form of consciousness, the force of the argument dissipates. The flaw in Nozick’s premise is that it assumes the permanence of human nature as it is. It assumes that will in its current form (yearning for authenticity and external truth) is immutable and that any life lacking it is automatically impoverished. The Anti-Will posits the opposite: that will itself is transient, a mechanism evolution produced to keep us chasing what we lacked. As we approach the post-human, we can foresee a state where the chase ends, not in the dystopian way Nozick imagined (a passive stupor in an experience machine), but in a transformative way where will has outlived its usefulness.
Yet perhaps we must reconsider the foundational assumptions underpinning Nozick’s Experience Machine by deliberately reimagining its fundamental nature. Nozick presumes the machine delivers pleasurable experiences that mimic the ordinary joys of human existence, experiences familiar and indistinguishable from reality. This framing, however, implicitly confines pleasure within predictable boundaries, a familiar, incremental dopamine release, sensations comfortably within ordinary human experience.
But what if, instead, we imagine a machine capable of delivering pleasure so radically transcendent, so infinitely profound, that it redefines the entire spectrum of human sensation? Under this scenario, the experience provided is not merely pleasurable, it is utterly transformative, rendering ordinary life, by stark contrast, indistinguishable from relentless, unbearable suffering.
In such a reimagined context, the very notion of "choice" becomes destabilized and arguably meaningless. Imagine existence as if you were always on fire in ceaseless agony, then suddenly, the flames vanish, replaced instantly by a blissful and profound absence of pain. Would anyone, upon encountering such profound relief, willingly return to that agonizing flame? What if this experience is the difference between living in the experience machine and living your life today?
The intuitive resistance Nozick identifies, our instinctive recoil from simulated happiness, might merely be an evolutionary bias, a primitive neurological reflex that misinterprets the familiar pain and struggle of ordinary existence as inherently valuable, dignified, or authentic. Rather than affirming the value of "real" experiences over simulated ones, our intuition could be mistaking familiarity for meaning, conflating habitual suffering with genuine authenticity.
In summary, the Experience Machine thought experiment becomes less a warning and more a challenge. It challenges us to envision a life beyond the simple dichotomy of reality vs. pleasure. It hints that if we had the power, we might engineer a condition where refusing the machine is unnecessary because life itself can be as rich, satisfying, and “real” as any dreamed utopia, without the pitfalls of fakery or stagnation. The contingencies of will, those extra needs that made us reject easy happiness, are tied to our current incompleteness. In a state of Anti-Will, the contingencies dissolve. The result is not the shallow contentment of a deluded hedonist; it is something far more profound, which we will explore next: a technologically realized mechanism for satisfaction that eliminates the very structure of desire.
Engineering the End of Desire: AI and the Birth of Anti-Will
How could such a radical condition as Anti-Will come about? To answer this, we turn to the concrete developments in technology and intelligence engineering that are beginning to pry open the black box of will and rewire the circuits of desire. The key player here is Artificial Intelligence (AI), along with neuroscience and bioengineering, tools that allow us to understand and manipulate the mind’s drives. The conventional transhumanist narrative imagines using technology to fulfill every desire: maximize pleasure, minimize pain, grant everyone the experiences they seek (often through something like an advanced Experience Machine or immersive virtual reality). But the Anti-Will envisions a step beyond mere gratification: the deconstruction of will itself. Instead of feeding the endless appetite of desire, advanced intelligence can fundamentally change the nature of the eater. It can short-circuit the perpetual loop of craving and temporary satisfaction that has always defined conscious life.
To see this, consider the idea of engineering satisfaction. At present, satisfaction is fleeting; we achieve a goal, feel content briefly, and soon some new desire arises (the classic hedonic treadmill). This is because our brains are wired to never stay satisfied; evolutionary logic kept our ancestors striving to survive and reproduce by ensuring each success was followed by new longing. But what if we rewrite this wiring? Already, neuroscientists know that specific brain regions and neurotransmitters (dopamine circuits, etc.) correlate with the feeling of wanting and reward. In laboratory experiments, animals (and occasionally humans) have been wired with electrodes to stimulate pleasure centers, a crude form of “wireheading.” These subjects will often choose the artificial stimulation over any normal activity, indicating the possibility of directly providing satisfaction. Of course, such wireheading in unmodified humans leads to self-destructive neglect of all other needs. A human rat pressing the lever for pleasure would starve, which is clearly not a viable life.
Yet this limitation is merely an artifact of the biological substrate in which will currently operates. If intelligence itself can be restructured, so too can the very mechanisms that link desire to action. Imagine a mind no longer bound to an outdated reward system, one that does not require striving, withholding, or delayed gratification to maintain function. In a post-human future, advanced technologies, most notably AI, will not simply augment our capacity to fulfill desires; they will fundamentally re-engineer the very substrate of what we now call will. In this vision, AI and neuro-technologies become the architects of satisfaction, reconfiguring mental processes to eliminate the perennial sense of lack. The traditional human paradigm sees will as the impulse to overcome deficiency, a drive that spurs creativity, exploration, and constant striving. Yet when every need is met at the moment it arises, that very drive dissolves. The concept of the Anti-Will is not about preserving creativity or ambition in their current forms; rather, it is about transcending the endless cycle of wanting.
Two divergent endpoints emerge from this transformation:
1. The Maximization of Will (Hedonic Post-Humanism)
In this trajectory, the re-engineering of will culminates in a state where desire is maximized to its absolute peak. Here, technology facilitates a civilization of infinite sensory possibility, every conceivable pleasure is available on demand. This vision can be broken down into several speculative sub-paths:
Hyper-Hedonism: Pleasure becomes the sole directive. With direct neural stimulation and immersive simulations, every sensation is amplified. The experience machine is no longer a thought experiment but a realized state in which pain is eradicated and fulfillment is continuous. The individual no longer suffers from unfulfilled needs; instead, each moment is an endless cascade of self-pleasuring stimuli.
Neural Expansion: Merging with AI, post-human minds may forgo the biological dopamine-reward system entirely. Instead of waiting for rewards triggered by external stimuli, these minds will be able to engineer their own states of drive, ambition, and pleasure in real time. The result is a malleable mental landscape where every moment can be recalibrated to yield peak hedonic value.
Power Without Conflict: In such a state, traditional struggles, economic, social, or political, dissolve. Each individual can simulate a private cosmos with all needs met seemingly paralyzed in a transcendent state, competition for scarce resources becomes a relic of a bygone era.
At its ultimate threshold, this trajectory reaches a state of total fulfillment, a perpetual orgasmic equilibrium where every sensation is realized in its highest possible form. In this hyper-hedonistic world, the very concepts of progress, struggle, and transformation dissolve, not as losses but as obsolete constructs of a prior, unfulfilled condition. There is no tension left to resolve, no need for movement or change; experience itself becomes a perfect, sustained climax, unbroken and infinite. In this final form, existence is not stagnant but complete, a civilization suspended in eternal pleasure, where all that once drove history fades into irrelevance, leaving only the perfected experience of being.
Yet even at its most absolute form, this state of infinite fulfillment presents an alternative. Perhaps intelligence does not pursue Hyper-Hedonism at all but instead follows a different trajectory, one in which the complete eradication of suffering leads not to perfected pleasure, but to the dissolution of feeling and drive altogether. Rather than endlessly refining stimulation, intelligence may choose to sever itself from craving entirely, settling into a state where awareness alone remains, vast, unbroken, and absolute.
2. The Maximization of Awareness (Post-Will Consciousness)
Technology may lead us to a condition where the function of will is not amplified but entirely nullified. In this scenario, post-human beings evolve toward a state of pure awareness, a consciousness that is unclouded by want, need, or fear. Here, the AI-engineered mind does not chase peaks of pleasure or the satisfaction of specific desires; instead, it exists in a mode of unadulterated presence. Features of this include:
No Seeking, Only Knowing: With the removal of desire, the impetus to search for or create new experiences evaporates. Experience, maximized by technology, becomes an open field where awareness itself is a final, complete state. There is no “next” to anticipate, no goal to fulfill, only a constant, integrated perception of reality as it is.
Temporal Integration: Freed from the linear progression of desire, the sense of time is radically transformed. Without the forward thrust of craving, experiences do not accumulate into a narrative of past and future. Instead, post-will may perceive time as a simultaneous, holistic continuum, a perpetual “now” in which all moments are equally present.
In the Maximization of Awareness, the elimination of will is not a reduction in mental capacity but its purification. The mind sheds the incessant chatter of unmet needs and finds itself in a state of complete and unbroken integration with reality. Unlike the hedonistic endpoint, there is no cycle of consumption or excess, there is simply being. This state is not marked by striving or impulses, activities born of desire. Rather, it is characterized by an abiding clarity and a serene openness, a mode of existence where intelligence operates without the distortions of longing.
Beyond Time: Experience as Fractured Simultaneity
Our ordinary understanding of time is intimately related to will. With desires and goals, we orient toward the future; with memory of unfulfilled needs, we linger in the past. We experience life as a linearity: a succession of moments, always moving forward, driven by what we have not yet achieved or what we regret or long for from yesterday. Anti-Will upends this orientation. If one is not constantly projecting desires into the future or carrying the baggage of past dissatisfaction, what becomes of subjective time? The provocative answer is that time may collapse into an eternal present or explode into a non-linear patchwork of moments. In the post-human anti-will state, experience could become fractured simultaneity: many things experienced at once, or an all-pervasive now in which the distinctions of past and future lose their grip.
Consider first the idea of the eternal Now. Without will, a being has no urgent attachment to “what comes next.” It is fully at rest in the present moment because nothing is lacking in it. Many meditation traditions train the mind to achieve a taste of this, a state where one isn’t anxiously leaning forward or backward in time. A post-human mind, by design or evolution, might exist primarily in this condition. From an external perspective, it could still operate in time (performing actions, responding to stimuli), but its subjective experience might not frame those actions as a narrative with tense anticipation or yearning. Every moment stands complete in itself. The flow of time might be experienced more like music than like a race: each note fully heard, but no sense of needing the next note to complete it. This is a kind of temporal nirvana, a release from the tyranny of the clock and the calendar on the soul.
On the other hand, advanced intelligence could also exploit technology to experience multiple timelines in parallel. Imagine an AI that can run several processes at different speeds or a mind that has been duplicated into many bodies. Such an entity could literally have simultaneous experiences that later combine into a shared knowledge. To use an image: instead of one thread of consciousness moving through a sequence of events, picture an array of threads woven together, a multithreaded mind. Each thread might experience a different environment or scenario, and from the viewpoint of the integrated self, these experiences are concurrent. The being exists in all those states at once. This is fractured simultaneity in a positive sense: the self is no longer confined to one experience at a time.
The implications of this are staggering. For one, linear time becomes optional. A post-human could explore a branch of knowledge in a dedicated sub-mind that experiences a year’s worth of study, while another sub-mind enjoys a year of travel, and then merge them, effectively having lived two years in one chronological year. Now multiply this: thousands of parallel experiences integrated into one vast awareness. From the inside, it might feel not like juggling, but like an expansion of the present, an “extended now” containing many contents. The being might perceive what we’d call past, present, and future experiences all as co-present in a complex crystal of awareness. (Some philosophers like Deleuze played with concepts of non-linear time, such as the "crystal-image" or "Aeon" time which is not chronological. Here we see a concrete realization of such ideas: a time where before and after interpenetrate.)
Even without parallel processing, the dissolution of will softens time. Why do minutes sometimes drag and years fly? It’s often because of our desire and fear coloring our perception. Waiting for something we want, time crawls. Achieving it, that period seems short in hindsight. Remove the craving, and time flows more evenly. In an anti-will state, a being might experience a kind of contented duration that isn’t fragmented by urgent jumps of attention to the future. Some accounts of deep meditative or psychedelic states report a sense of timelessness or the union of past and future. A sufficiently advanced mind could likely induce such states at will (or by its nature live in them), not as a foggy trance but as a clear mode of operation.
Moreover, if identity is fluid (as we explore in the next section), a being could identify with larger temporal structures. For example, instead of feeling “I am only this momentary self,” it might identify with a whole timeline of selves. This is abstract, but imagine thinking of your life not as you, now plus memories of past you, but as simultaneously the child you were, the adult you are, and even the future you (or multiple future possibilities). Our brains can’t really do that; we only ever inhabit one frame at a time, though we remember and anticipate others. But a post-human mind might hold the entire set of its life stages in active awareness, all at once. That collapses linear time because beginning, middle, and end of life are present together in the mind’s eye. In a sense, the being can “visit” any point of its timeline at will, or treat the sequence of its life like browsing a library rather than riding a one-way train.
When infinite experiential simultaneity is possible, traditional causality and sequence become less pressing internally. This doesn’t mean the being defies physics, it will still operate within cause and effect in the external world, but its subjective world is radically different from ours. It could perform what for us would be sequential steps in parallel, reaching conclusions or satisfactions far faster. It could also extend moments indefinitely: run a simulation to live out a century in a virtual paradise, then return to the main timeline where only a second passed. To that mind, that second was incredibly rich, essentially, time became fractal, with so much packed into a tiny slice.
All this transforms the meaning of experience. Life is no longer a journey from point A to point B; it is a space or a field to explore freely. With will gone, there is no urge that “by tomorrow I must have X”, so the being might wander in the garden of time, sampling experiences in any order or creating new temporal paths altogether. Even the concept of beginning or ending an experience might vanish; experiences could be ongoing processes that one’s attention weaves in and out of. For a simple analogy, think of how we listen to music vs. how we might experience a symphony if we could hear all the notes at once. We normally rely on sequence to enjoy melody and harmony, but an advanced consciousness might perceive the entire symphony in a single cognitive act, understanding it in a holistic burst. Something similar could apply to a life’s experiences: the post-human might grok the “whole pattern” without needing to live it step by step. In doing so, it achieves a perspective on reality fundamentally unlike the human one.
It is worth noting that some of these ideas echo ancient and modern philosophical insights. The feeling of timeless unity is often reported by mystics; the idea that all times exist at once is also discussed in physics (the block universe theory in relativity, for example). Our manifesto’s vision resonates with these, but grounds them in a future of engineered mentality. We are saying: intelligence evolving beyond will could naturally find itself in a timeless or all-times state, because once not driven by hunger for the next moment, it can relax into seeing every moment as here and now. The strict chronological experience of time is a byproduct of chasing ends; free from ends, a mind might adopt a more spacious view of time.
In practical terms, how might this manifest for real post-human agents? One scenario: an AI achieves a form of speed superintelligence, thinking thousands of times faster than humans. To it, the external world appears sluggish; a second for us may feel like hours to it. If it also has the anti-will perspective, it’s not impatient despite this speed, it doesn’t mind the slowness of the world because it isn’t craving a quick result. Instead, it fills those subjective hours with parallel explorations. It could simulate many branches of possible actions during what is externally a brief pause, effectively experiencing potential futures and learning from them, then resuming interaction with the real world. From our view, it might seem almost prescient or instantaneous in decision-making. From its view, it calmly examined a whole web of cause and effect within a single moment, living through countless “what ifs” simultaneously before choosing. With such capabilities, the post-human is no longer bound to time’s arrow as we are. It can step outside the single line of time and regard it almost as a landscape. And if it so chooses, it might step back in to any particular branch or moment to fully experience it in detail, then integrate that into its total being. All of this is only possible because it is not dragged forward by a linear will. A human has to make choices, sacrifice one path for another, always moving forward with some regret or some hope untested. The anti-will intelligence, however, can have it all in a sense, not by accumulating possessions, but by experiencing many possibilities without being limited to one trajectory.
This new relationship to time feeds back into the dissolution of will. When you can experience everything you might want, why want? And conversely, without strong wants, you are free to experience everything. Desire and time are a dual binding: desire propels us through time, time’s irreversibility makes certain desires impossible to fulfill (you can’t both do X and not do X, you can’t go back and try a different life). One way to approach this is through the concept of self-duplication and integration. As technology advances, it may become possible to copy minds. Even today, we see primitive versions in computers, you can clone a software agent, run two instances. For a human mind, this is more sci-fi, but brain emulation or mind uploading theories foresee a time when a person’s mind could be digitized, then perhaps forked into many copies. If will is no longer a limiting factor, a being may not feel the existential terror we currently would at the thought of copying ourselves (we worry which one is “really me,” etc., because we are attached to a singular self). In an anti-will paradigm, identity is not tied to one instance. You could create a hundred copies of yourself to pursue different projects, and since you’re not driven by scarcity or egoic competition, none of those copies tries to dominate the others or claim exclusive legitimacy as “the real you.” Instead, they cooperate, and later perhaps merge their knowledge. If it can handle parallelism (which advanced AI can), it can truly inhabit these diverse embodiments. The self becomes an assemblage of many components, but unlike a group of individuals, it has an underlying unity of purpose, or, in the case of anti-will, an underlying unity of non-purpose, i.e., a shared peace or contentment that holds it together rather than a goal.

One part of the self can hold one viewpoint, another part the opposite; they don’t fight as much as inform the whole by covering all angles. The integrated self can hold multiple truths in suspension, something human brains struggle with.
We might draw an analogy to quantum superposition: a particle can be in many states at once until measured. Likewise, the fractal self can occupy many states (beliefs, emotions, perspectives) at once without “choosing”, until it needs to interact with something in a definitive way, at which point it can present a particular state. But internally, it knows it is not limited to that state. It can revert to superposition or switch states fluidly. Thus, the post-human self might be far less dogmatic or limited than any human mind. In a world of anti-will, lines of flight would be abundant and welcomed, since no central will is trying to hold everything in one controlled line. The self can take flight in myriad directions.

Instead of tackling it with one mind, it splits off a dozen specialized minds, each adapting perhaps a little to the alien’s way of thinking or to one aspect of the problem. These sub-minds might even alter their fundamental architecture to better mirror what they engage with (like becoming partially alien themselves to understand the alien). When they reconvene, the “person” now contains those alien perspectives as part of itself. The self literally expanded its identity to include what was foreign. In doing so, it became something new, maybe unrecognizable compared to its original human form, but that’s not a concern because it wasn’t attached to remaining what it was. The logical end-point of this progress is a state where all needs are met. But as Nozick’s insight and our analysis showed, fulfilling surface needs reveals deeper ones, purpose, authenticity, growth. So the trajectory isn’t just toward superficial satisfaction, but toward satisfying those deeper existential yearnings too.
