Eugenics Evolved
The West will debate the ethics. Authoritarian states will not.

In an era where society grapples with the complexities of human evolution and societal ethics, the specter of eugenics resurfaces with a nuanced face. Once discredited by the horrors of the mid-20th century, the concept of genetic manipulation has evolved, shedding its malignant past yet bringing forth a host of new dilemmas. We must ask ourselves: what does the future hold for humanity as we stand on the precipice of creating ‘designer babies’?
Historically, eugenics sought to engineer a ‘better’ human race, a pursuit marred by the inhumane practices of Nazi Germany. Today, outright genetic suppression of ethnic groups is universally condemned. Yet, the allure of influencing our genetic destiny persists. Is it truly unthinkable that society might gravitate toward preventing the propagation of certain genes, not based on race or belief, but rather to eliminate genetic disorders or enhance disease resistance? What about a future where a parent could give their child a competitive edge intellectually or physically?
Imagine a world where the promise of eradicating genetic diseases and crafting an ideal child is not merely a distant dream but a routine reality. This scenario invokes a vision akin to Gattaca, where a stark divide exists between the genetically enhanced and those left untouched by science's mercurial hand. In this world, the benefits of gene editing are manifold. The eradication of hereditary ailments like cystic fibrosis, Huntington's disease, and sickle cell anemia would alleviate immense human suffering and significantly reduce healthcare costs. Parents could ensure their children not only lead healthier lives but possess enhanced physical and intellectual capabilities, potentially revolutionizing human potential.
Yet, with these advancements comes a profound ethical quagmire. The societal pressure on parents to genetically optimize their offspring would be immense. The fear of leaving one’s child at a disadvantage could drive a relentless pursuit of perfection. Democratic societies in particular will grapple with the ethical ramifications of gene editing. While some will resist technological interventions like the Amish resist electricity, viewing them as antithetical to natural human development, others will embrace them, driven by a desire to secure their progeny’s competitive edge.
In contrast, while we in the West debate ethics, authoritarian regimes might embrace gene manipulation without hesitation, crafting ideal citizens tailored for specific roles within society. If North Korea had the ability to genetically create a perfect citizen today, don’t you think they would? To them, there may be no ethical issue around whether designer babies are right or wrong. While we’re debating the ethics, they could be incubating the next Olympians and Nobel Prize winners. Imagine a nation where genetic markers for loyalty and obedience are embedded in every individual, professions predetermined before birth, with no desire to rebel or question the order of things. Such a society could function with the precision of an ant colony, each person a cog in a meticulously engineered machine. Authoritarian countries could create a utopia for themselves by carefully crafting the society they want. The urge to replicate the eugenics of the past might rear its ugly head here. Sure, removing disabilities before they can form is much more humane than sterilization, but what’s to stop the state, or groups from urging the state, to select for genes based on race, sexual orientation, or other out-group traits?
The landscape of gene design will undoubtedly differ between authoritarian and democratic societies. In the former, the state may dictate genetic outcomes, constructing a homogeneous citizenry from the top down. In the latter, individual choice will prevail, leading to a mosaic of genetic traits shaped by parental ambitions and socio-economic status being built from the bottom up.
As we contemplate the challenges of eugenics evolved, we must consider the ideologies that will guide these developments. Will the West’s emphasis on individualism and ethical debate hinder its ability to keep pace with authoritarian states that pursue genetic uniformity? Or will diversity lead to further advancement?
In the end, eugenics will be a self-selected evolution for those of us in the West, with those not choosing to evolve being the group that gets naturally demarginalized. For Authoritarian countries, this next wave of eugenics will be selected traits by the state, and may more resemble eugenics of the past. Regardless, The future of human evolution will be engineered.
