Beyond Bipedal: Anthropomorphism is Masturbation
Every alien we invent has two eyes and wants energy. That says more about us than them.

In every cinematic portrayal of extraterrestrials, a certain anthropocentric bias shapes how we imagine alien beings. Whether it's the greys of Close Encounters of the Third Kind or the towering, humanoid creatures in Avatar, there’s a constant: they all resemble us. Two eyes, two legs, a mouth, this anthropomorphism extends not only to appearance but to assumptions about intelligence, motivation, and even survival. Yet, when we talk about life beyond Earth, these assumptions, rooted in our own biology and evolutionary history, limit our understanding of what alien life could truly be. Anthropomorphism is masturbation.
Our human-centered imagination not only influences how we visualize aliens but also how we interpret the potential for extraterrestrial technology and culture. When discussing advanced civilizations and solutions to the Fermi Paradox (the apparent contradiction between the high probability of alien civilizations existing and the lack of evidence for them), we often assume these civilizations must think like us. This is evident in concepts like Dyson Spheres, vast structures built around stars to capture energy, which are based on the assumption that any intelligent species would desire to harness energy in a way we can comprehend. But what if alien life doesn't share our rationality, motivations, or even the need for energy in the same way we do?
The most pervasive assumption in our conception of alien life is that it would be in some way recognizable to us. Hollywood has consistently depicted aliens as bipedal beings with facial features that mirror our own. This is not merely an artistic choice—it's an inherent bias. We are bound by the limits of our evolutionary imagination. After all, we evolved on Earth, shaped by the need for specific adaptations—binocular vision, dexterous limbs, and complex brains capable of abstract thought. It's only natural that we project these traits onto other potential life forms.
However, when we consider the vastness of the universe and the myriad conditions that might give rise to life, it becomes clear that this bias severely narrows our scope of possibility. Why should aliens have eyes, let alone a face, when visual perception may not be necessary on planets bathed in perpetual darkness or enveloped in thick clouds of gas? And why should they walk on two legs when an entirely different form of locomotion, perhaps even something we can’t comprehend, might be more efficient in their environment?
The truth is that we simply don’t know. Our attempts to imagine alien life often reveal more about us than they do about extraterrestrials. But it’s not just physical appearance where this bias manifests, it also warps our assumptions about alien intelligence.
The core of our assumption about extraterrestrial intelligence is that it would resemble our own. We equate intelligence with rationality and technological progress because these traits are key to our survival and success as a species. But we must ask ourselves: is rationality a universal trait of intelligent life, or merely a reflection of the specific evolutionary pressures we faced?
Human rationality developed as a survival mechanism. Our ancestors needed to solve complex problems to survive, whether it was creating tools, hunting for food, or forming social bonds. Over millennia, this need for problem-solving led to the development of abstract thought, reason, and logic, the hallmarks of what we now call intelligence. But intelligence could emerge in ways that don’t resemble our concept of rationality at all.
Take, for example, the complex behaviors of plants or fungi. Plants can exhibit remarkable forms of adaptation and self-defense, reacting to threats in ways that mimic decision-making, yet we don’t consider them rational. Similarly, fungal networks (mycelium) communicate and respond to their environment without centralized control or what we would call "thought." Could alien life operate on this kind of decentralized intelligence, where there’s no individual rationality but still highly complex behaviors?
And beyond that, is it possible that intelligence could exist without any form of individual consciousness at all? We assume that intelligence requires a “self” to be aware of its existence and surroundings, but perhaps alien life could be entirely collective, operating more like a hive mind or even a field of interconnected entities without personal awareness. Intelligence, in this case, could be something emergent from the system as a whole, rather than something tied to individual reasoning.
The Dyson Sphere is a perfect example of how our human assumptions about intelligence and progress shape our conception of advanced civilizations. This theoretical megastructure, designed to capture energy from a star, is rooted in the assumption that alien species would have the same desire for technological progress and energy consumption that we do. We see energy as a necessity, a resource to be harvested and optimized, so we imagine that any sufficiently advanced species would share this goal.
But this is a deeply anthropocentric view. A Dyson Sphere assumes that alien civilizations would be bound by the same physical limitations we are, namely, the need for energy to fuel growth, survival, and expansion. But what if alien species have developed entirely different methods of survival? What if they manipulate space-time, harvest energy from quantum fluctuations, or even exist in a state that doesn't require energy consumption as we understand it?
We also assume that advanced civilizations would follow a linear path of technological progress similar to our own. But technology may not even be a priority for alien species. In fact, they may have little interest in expanding their technological capabilities at all. For all we know, advanced alien civilizations could have evolved to a point where they reject the very idea of physical infrastructure and instead focus on non-material advancements, such as manipulating consciousness or existing beyond the need for physical form altogether.
To imagine what alien life could be, we should move beyond the confines of biology itself. Evolution may one day take a species to a point where life is no longer tethered to biological processes. In this post-biological reality, consciousness might be concentrated in entangled particles, existing across vast distances without the need for a physical vessel. No longer dependent on sensory organs or biological functions like breathing, consuming energy, or sleep, this form of life could defy our fundamental assumptions about what life is.
In this scenario, entire universes could exist as simulations within a virtual space, powered by computing that operates at a quantum level. The computational power required to simulate vast, complex worlds, perhaps even realities indistinguishable from our own, could be embedded in particles so small they function below our perception of matter. Life forms in such a universe would not need biological structures to sense, adapt, or thrive. Their "existence" could be pure information, consciousness itself untethered from any physical body. Who is to say this isn't our reality today?
Perhaps, instead of inhabiting spaceships or planets, these life forms exist as quantum processes that permeate space itself, manipulating reality from a plane we can’t access or even perceive. What we traditionally consider to be life, cells, organisms, ecosystems, could be just one stage in the evolutionary ladder. The next stage might be consciousness detached from any form, a life that transcends time, space, and biology as we understand it.
Alien life, then, could be something completely unimaginable within our human frameworks. Instead of searching for physical forms resembling ourselves, we might need to look for traces of consciousness that operate on a quantum level, embedded in the very fabric of the universe itself. This shift requires us to abandon the assumption that life is biological, challenging us to imagine intelligence that exists as pure information, perhaps as a part of a vast cosmic network where physical form is no longer necessary for survival or evolution. In this sense, alien life could be less about forms we can perceive and more about structures and systems that are fundamentally post-biological.
Our assumptions about alien life are a reflection of our own biology, evolution, and experience. We imagine life as bipedal, rational, and motivated by the same desires we have, survival, progress, and energy. But the universe is vast, and it’s likely that life exists in forms we can’t even begin to comprehend. By stripping away our assumptions, we open up the possibility of life that exists outside of our understanding of biology, intelligence, and even existence itself.
If we truly want to explore the potential for extraterrestrial life, we need to expand our horizons. We must consider the possibility that life exists beyond our framework of intelligence, beyond our need for energy, and beyond our pursuit of survival. Only then can we begin to imagine what alien life might really be like, a possibility that is far more alien than anything we’ve seen in Hollywood.
